Aircraft Conceptual Design Synthesis: by Denis Howe

This is inevitably an iterative procedure which consists of alternative phases of synthesis and analysis. Many compromises are inevitable. Aerodynamic performance has to be matched access the operating speed range, blended with power plant characteristics, yield satisfactory control and stability and at the same time not unduly penalise structural considerations and the consequent mass penalties. The integration of advanced flying control systems with the aerodynamic and structural design is a unique and vital procedure. At the same time as the technical aspects of the design are under consideration it is essential to allow for manufacturing considerations. The whole design process must make use of the most advanced tools available in computer aided design and manufacturing. There are a number of excellent texts which cover many of the various facets of initial aircraft design. Some concentrate on one or two of the implied disciplines to the detriment of the others. Although some include consideration of the initial, synthesis, phase of the design the usual emphasis is on analytical methods. Certain of these texts are also restricted, implicitly or explicitly, to particular classes of aircraft.

Principles of Jet Propulsion and Gas Turbines

This introduced certain difficulties, because it was necessary to omit certain data and useful information. It is felt, however, that because the discussions in this book are confined to basic principles the observance of the interests of military security has not impaired the attainment of the ain objective: the presentation of requisite fundamental theory pertinent to an intelligent understanding of jet-propulsion engines and gas-turbine power plants. The author has drawn freely from the unclassified literature, and credit is due t those authors, professional societies, publisher, and manufacturers who were kind enough to permit the use of their material. In this connection the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics deserves special mention. References to publications are given in the text, and those used in the of the chapter.

Aerodynamics of Wings and Bodies by Hoth Ashley Marten Landahl

There is no shortage of books on aerodynamic theory, so let us point to two threads which make this one certainly distinct and possibly an improvement. The first is the realization that the method of matched asymptotic expansions, developed primarily by Kaplun and Lagerstrom, provides a unifying framework for introducing the boundary-value problems of external flow over thin wings and bodies. Not always an unavoidable necessity nor the clearest introduction to a new idea, this method nevertheless rewards the student's patience with a power and open-ended versatility that are startling. For instance, as apparently first realized by Friedrichs, it furnishes a systematic, rigorous explanation of lifting-line theory-the only approach of its kind which we know. In principle, every approximate development carried out along this avenue implies the possibility of improvements to include the higher-order effects of thickness, angle of attack, or any other small parameter characterizing the problem. Our second innovation is to embrace the important role of the high-speed.We shared with some colleagues a concern lest the essential content of classical aerodynamic theory-still useful background for the practice of our profession and the foundation for currently vital research problems-be squeezed out of the aeronautical curriculum by competition from such lively topics as hypersonic fluid mechanics heat transfer, non equilibrium phenomena, and magnetogas dynamics. We sought efficiency, a challenge to the enthusiasm of modern students with their orientation toward scientific rigor, and the comprehensiveness that can accompany an advanced point of view.

Flight Dynamics Principles, Second Edition

This book was first published and during that time there has been a modest but steady demand for the book. It is apparent that during this period there has been a growing recognition in academic circles that it is more appropriate to teach Aircraft stability and control in a systems context, rather than the traditional aerodynamic context and this is a view endorsed by industry. This is no doubt due to the considerable increase in application of automatic flight control to all types of aircraft and to the ready availability of excellent computer tools for handling the otherwise complex calculations. Thus the relevance of the book is justified and this has been endorsed by positive feedback from readers all over the world. This book is primarily intended for undergraduate and post graduate students studying aeronautical subjects and those students studying avionics, systems engineering, control engineering, mathematics, etc. who wish to include some flight dynamics in their studies. Of necessity the scope of the book is limited to linearised small perturbation aircraft models since the material is intended for those coming to the subject for the first time. The classical linearised theory of the stability and control of aircraft is timeless, it is brilliant in its relative simplicity and it is very securely anchored in the domain of the aerodynamicist.

Classic Airliners: Boeing Stratocruiser

Boing's Models 377 is arguable the definitive design of the great propliner era of the 1950. Its portly, blunt-nosed exterior hid a cabin that was built for the ulmost comfort, in an age when only the very rich could afford to fly. Only 56 Stratocruiser were ever built, but the design had an impact and inspired a love out of all proportion to its number. Stratocruiser have become synonymous with luxury air travel. The cocktail bar in the downstairs lounge. The stratocruiser pushed the technology of piston-engined aircraft t the limits and sometimes beyond as early technical hitches and crashes were endured and overcome.
